Fascinating, Rare, Berlin Iron Ring Stating “Gold gab ich für Eisen” [I Gave Gold for Iron]
Prior to offering this historic ring for sale, all of the Berlin Iron jewelry we featured came from the efforts of the German government to raise money for their treasury which was strained by the fight against Napolean in the early 19th century. That was the origin of the patriotic movement to give gold for iron as is written on the wonderful and rare band you now see: “Gold gab ich fur eisen” . With the outbreak of the first world war in 1914, the effort to increase the treasury was reinstated. Gold was once again called for and replaced by iron jewels. This beautiful iron band, inserted into gold at the time it was made, testifies to that historic moment. Is a symbol of patriotic resistance and is a piece of social history.

That postcard with the the Germans and the French about the clock was uncalled for. I take offense that you called the German people stupid. Was Einstein stupid, was Anne Frank stupid, was Beethoven stupid, was Martin Luther, I can keep going but you understand (I hope)!

I’m sorry, I didn’t make myself clear in this again - I didn’t actually mean that myself, I was trying to give dialogue to what the postcard seemed to be saying. I’ve made this mistake before, not making it clear that it was satire, and not my own real opinion. I’ll explain.

It was a French propaganda postcard targeted against Germany, so I can only assume it was meant to portray the Germans as ‘stupid,’ as is the job of negative propaganda. The French at the bottom doesn’t make it any clearer, so I can only really go on what the picture shows.

The French translates (from Google translate, so it could be off),

They came to our clocks
They won the log

And really, the whole postcard is absurd. Two Frenchmen have four clocks, while a German man holds a log. A log. The Frenchmen laugh at the German man, while the German man looks slightly ashamed. But for what? Because he has a log, and no clocks, of course! Except it’s not of course, because this situation never happens. And if it does, it is surely rare and not indicative of an entire nation.  And what could it possible indicate about any nation at all ever? Certainly not stupidity. So no, I don’t think Germans are stupid. Nor do I think French are stupid. I think this postcard is stupid.

[Two images. Top image: Can’t talk to atheist friends about religion/They think it’s stupid or boring. Can’t talk to religious friends about religion/They think I’m blaspheming]

It’s not actually that bad, but it is quite hard to find people I can talk to intelligently about religion. I want to talk about the Bible without having to explain the Documentary Hypothesis and Deutero-Paul. I want to talk about Catholicism without reviewing all the documents of Vatican II first. I want to talk about Judaism without a discussion of how Judaism isn’t Christianity minus Jesus. It’s a bit easier to talk about Eastern religions, thankfully, but that’s probably in large part because I don’t know enough about them.

This is why almost all my friends in real life are religion majors too…

Except for that time when I had a bunch of physics major friends for some reason. They’re interesting and nice people, but impossible to talk to about the humanities (even though they want to - they just didn’t know anything).

For some reason I don’t have that same problem here. Maybe because on the internet I can find people who share even more obscure interests.
