Der ewige Jude is a propaganda documentary produced in Germany of 1940. It was made under the supervision of Joseph Goebbels, minister of propaganda for the Third Reich, as an attempt to poison the Germans against the Jews of Poland. Poland was to be a new space for the third Reich and the Aryan race, and so those who already inhabited the land needed to be eliminated.

I have read Goebbels’ diaries in relation to the beginning production of this film. He looks upon the conditions of the Warsaw Ghetto and sees its squalor and cramped, dirty, horrible living conditions, and concludes the Jews produced such conditions themselves with their subhuman lifestyles.

Goebbels perhaps was so blatantly ignorant of the origins of the Jewish Ghettos that he does not know that they were not in such squalor by choice, but I doubt that. He was corrupt to say the very very least, but he was intelligent. So what was he thinking? Goebbels didn’t approve of Hitler’s reactionary anti-semitic politics at first. In early 1926 Goebbels wrote in his diary:

”I no longer fully believe in Hitler…That’s the terrible thing: my inner support has been taken away.”

But Goebbels was incredibly insecure. Later that year Hitler met Goebbels in Munich, and recognized Goebbels for his talents in Propaganda. After that meeting Goebbels wrote in his diary:

“I love him - He has thought through everything”

Perhaps Hitler changed Goebbels perceptions of anti-semitism on a purely intellectual basis, but based on Goebbels’ record of insecurity, and his subsequent undying love for Hitler following their meeting in Munich, I believe Goebbels’ psychology is much more complicated than that of a misinformed, ignorant racist.

Nevertheless, this so-called documentary portrays Jews as the cause of all evil, and the cause of the downfall of Germany following WWI, and Goebbels’ approval of such propaganda is inexcusable.

I give all my televised speeches while holding a giant bouquet of drooping flowers, and with two men standing uncomfortably close to me. Sure, it’s the best way to do things.
